Clive Rainey - Habitat for Humanity International's First Volunteer (not just locally)- will be speaking at the HopeBuilder Breakfast Oct. 4 at 8 a.m. Convention Center - free!!
Please RSVP to 503-364-6642

Clive Rainey joined Habitat for Humanity International on April 1, 1977, soon after the organization was formed, as its first volunteer. One of his early duties was serving as chair of the family selection committee for the house-building program of Koinonia, a rural Christian community where the idea of building homes in partnership with the poor was conceived. It was Rainey who brought the concept of “Sweat Equity” to Koinonia—and ultimately Habitat – after learning that developers of middle-class housing sometimes used a family’s unskilled labor on their house in lieu of a down payment. Today “Sweat Equity” is a key part of every Habitat build in 80 countries worldwide.  Read more - click here.

Through volunteer labor and tax-deductible donations of money and materials, Habitat for Humanity of the Mid-Willamette Valley builds and rehabilitates simple, decent houses with the help of the homeowner (partner) families.  After a partner family completes 500 sweat equity hours, a Habitat home is sold to the family for no profit, financed with affordable, 0%-interest loans.  The homeowners' monthly mortgage payments are recycled into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more houses.

Habitat for Humanity of the Mid-Willamette Valley has been serving the community since 1991, working in concert with volunteers, donors, and partner families to build decent, affordable homes in Salem, Keizer, Polk County and the greater Stayton area which now includes Turner.  To date, our affiliate has built more than 85 homes, housing more than 400 individuals- including over 300 children.

Your gifts help us provide strength, stability, and self- reliance to low and moderate income families. No gift is too small.  Thank you for your support.

Habitat for Humanity of the Mid-Willamette Valley’s ReStore needs you.

Volunteer opportunities are always available with Habitat for Humanity.  The non-profit agency builds homes for low to moderate income families to purchase with a 0% interest and low monthly payments.

Volunteers play a huge role. They help build the homes, work in the office, help out in the office, and work at the ReStore.

The money from the ReStore is instrumental in supporting Habitat’s home building mission and they need your help.  The store would not exist without volunteers.  On a perfect day, they need 10 – 12 self-starters over the age of 16 and the schedule is extremely flexible.  Most volunteers work two to four hour shifts. You can come once a week, once a month, or anytime that fits your schedule.  Even 15 minutes to come sweep a floor is greatly appreciated.

The ReStore is a retail store, similar to a thrift store, that takes gently used donated household and construction materials and resells them at a significantly lower price than one would pay for a new item.

Items they sell include tools, appliances, furniture, household fixtures, flooring, bathroom sinks and tubs, office chairs, outdoor equipment, office equipment and that is not the entire list. The ReStore at 1249 13th St. in Salem is large and jam packed daily with great usable items for homes and businesses.

Some of the tasks that volunteers take care of at the ReStore are assisting customers find items, measuring if necessary and carrying items to their cars.  Volunteers also assist with taking donations, placing items on the sales floor, driving a truck to pick up donations in the community, arranging merchandise displays in creative ways, repairing items, touching up furniture, and helping with the recycling.  The ReStore recycles all types of metal and cardboard including bottles and cans for deposit.

The ReStore can sometimes accommodate groups of people such as church youth or clubs that want to do volunteer work.  This is a great team-building activity for people in your work place or any other group and a great way to give back to the community.

There are no special skills needed unless you are driving one of the trucks.  Then all you need is a regular driver’s license and a good driving record.  There is a volunteer waiver form for all to fill out with emergency contact information. You will receive a volunteer t-shirt.

Volunteering for Habitat for Humanity of the Mid-Willamette Valley ReStore is an easy way to get started helping local families realize their dream of homeownership.  As you give your time and effort to the ReStore, you build friendships and community.  By doing jobs that would normally need to be paid, you allow the ReStore to give even more of the proceeds to help local families become homeowners.

If you are interested in volunteering at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore at 1249 13th St. in Salem, OR you can call 503-485-4845 or just drop in and talk to Chris, Corlan, Jacob or Joe.   For more information about Habitat for Humanity of the Mid-Willamette Valley go online to
